Alberta Prairie offers an exciting one-day
adventure on board a real steam or diesel-powered train. Different
themes are enacted throughout the season, including murder mysteries,
family and dinner theatre specials. For a day full of activities
which is truly different and interesting.
All excursions include a full course buffet
meal, which is included in the fare, on board entertainment and
maybe even a train robbery. All meals during the summer are presented
in the community hall in Big Valley, a large tent in Big Valley
or the community hall in Stettler.
The train leaves Stettler, Alberta, and returns
five to six hours later. Stettler is located in the Heart of Central
Alberta and is a leisurely three-hour drive from Calgary.
At some
point during your excursion the train may be brought to a screeching
halt. Look out! It's the dreaded outlaw "Bolton Gang".
They are known to frequent these parts and on occasion hold up
the train. But fear not the Canadian Metis hero, Gabriel Dumont,
is there to stop them. After a short but furious gun battle, the
money the outlaws took from passengers is retrieved. Since it's
impossible to tell whom the money belongs to, it is donated to
a number of children's charities. (keep some small change handy)
During your journey on board the train you will travel through
the beautiful rolling and treed countryside of Alberta's Parkland.
Snacks and drinks are included on the motor coach portion (van
or bus)
Complete packages include transportation
to and from Stettler, diesel train excursion from Stettler
and return, 5-course meals with choice of three entrees,
plus entertainment.
Train portion of trip is approximately five hours.
Rat's
Nest Cave is a wild, undeveloped cave with no artificial lights,
boardwalks or handrails.
This Adventure Tour involves an 18m (60-ft)
rappel on a "figure-of-eight" rappelling device. This
is backed up by a safety line. No experience is necessary as we
provide all the instructions. Participants will be climbing, crawling
and squeezing (through the "Laundry Chute") while inside
the cave.
Rat's Nest Cave is a constant 5 degree celsius all
year. Why is that? Because caves reflect the mean annual temperature
so no matter what the outside weather it's always pleasant inside
the cave. Like most alpine caves, it is cool in summer, mild in
winter.
Bring 1 or 2 small, wrapped energy snacks
such as a granola bar, chocolate bar etc. for taking into the
cave and bottled water for when you come out. We recommend either
a compact digital or disposable camera with flash for taking photos.
Anything you wear or take into the cave will get covered in fine
mud, so avoid new fancy clothing or camera equipment. Do not expect
to carry anything into the cave. You will need to have both hands
free at all times. Backpacks are provided for carrying gear to
the cave.
Appropriate dress for caving is warm but not
bulky clothes such as jeans/long pants and T-shirt plus fleece/hood"
on top. (We provide coveralls, kneepads, and gloves.) You will
also need good footwear - hiking boots are best but a trail/sturdy
running shoe will be fine.
